TPG Elevates Operator Training with Mevea Simulators

“The advantage of having the simulator built by Mevea is that it is the best worldwide when it comes to customization.”

Terminal Portuario de Guayaquil (TPG), part of Hanseatic Global Terminals and one of Ecuador’s leading container terminals, has significantly strengthened its operator development program with Mevea’s high-fidelity training simulators. By integrating the Mevea Pro 5 and Pro 8 systems into their daily routines, TPG has improved safety, reduced the use of critical resources, and accelerated operator readiness—all without interrupting terminal operations and, even better, further optimizing equipment usage for production purposes.

From Training Bottlenecks to Scalable Operator Development

Before adopting continuous simulation-based training, TPG trained its operators primarily with real equipment. This required having dedicated equipment available for training purposes. Such an approach placed new operators into a complex and inconsistent, volatile environment, increasing their exposure to operational risks while also reducing the terminal’s overall operational capacity. In addition, it required the use of fuel—a costly and polluting resource—during training sessions.

As Mr Josué Mena, Chief of Training and Development, explains:

“We used the actual equipment and spent resources. There is a high risk when training this way, and costs are affected (they are higher).”

TPG sought a safer, more efficient alternative that would allow training to scale without imposing additional strain on daily operations.

A Modern Training Environment with Mevea Pro 5 and Pro 8

To achieve this, TPG implemented two Mevea simulator packages precisely tailored to their training needs:

Mevea Pro 5 – Mobile Equipment available at TPG

Mevea Pro 5 includes the training packages for:

Mevea Pro 8 – Reflecting TPG Crane equipment

Mevea Pro 8 includes the training package for:

These systems incorporate Mevea’s physics-based simulation technology along with the customization of various elements reflecting TPG cranes and terminal environment.

According to Mr Faustino Tejedor, Operator Instructor at TPG:

“We got our port in the simulator exactly how we have it here. Operators can practice in the simulator the same way as in reality.”

Immediate Improvements Across Training and Operations

The introduction of advanced Mevea training simulators has reshaped TPG’s approach to workforce development. The simulators operate daily for full training shifts. New operators now complete their initial evaluations and practice in the simulator before using actual equipment, allowing them to enter the real equipment with greater confidence and fundamental skills already in place.

The increasing use of Mevea simulators has also helped TPG structure a more efficient and scalable training pipeline. Operators can now develop fundamental skills in a controlled environment before moving to real machinery, contributing to safer and more consistent on-the-job performance. As Mr Faustino Tejedor notes:

“We are going to have all the operators of our port trained with our Mevea simulator.”

Why TPG Has Chosen Mevea

A decisive factor for TPG was Mevea’s ability to deliver a fully customized training simulator that replicates real operating conditions with exceptional precision. This level of accuracy sets Mevea apart and ensures that operators train in an environment that matches exactly TPG’s actual terminal layout, handling characteristics, and equipment behavior.

Mr Tejedor summarizes it succinctly:

“The advantage of having the simulator built by Mevea is that it is the best worldwide when it comes to customization.”
